History Restored, Community Renewed

St. Kieran's Community Centre has witnessed nearly two centuries of West Clare life. Built in 1837 as a cruciform church on the scenic banks of the Shannon estuary, the building served the local community for generations before falling into disrepair in the 1960s, and a new church was constructed across the road in 1977.

The old church briefly found life as a factory in the 1970s, producing board games before standing empty once again. But the community never forgot their historic building.

In the mid-1980s, Shannon Development returned the property to local hands, and through sheer determination and volunteer effort, the community transformed it into the centre you see today. Labasheeda’s new community centre opened its doors in 1988.

Since then, countless volunteers have built walls, laid floors, installed heating, and brought the space back to life. Today, ongoing restoration work continues to preserve original features, including restoring the stunning wooden church windows, whilst ensuring the building serves the community for generations to come.

Now the long aisle area is being renovated, the windows have been opened again and light is coming back into this part of the building. The natural light has returned to a space that has an important place in the church’s history and we hope it helps people remember the many who worshipped here in the past. Further work continues as we make this space a modern usable area for everyone.

See in the gallery for more photographs of the renovation works.
